The Independent reports that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has renewed calls for the Government to create more public holidays in order to help people cope with the “intense” pressures of the workplace.
Workers in England and Wales get eight bank holidays a year, fewer than any other EU country and behind the bloc’s average of 12 days. The TUC also wants people who work bank holidays to be handed the right to premium pay or time off in lieu.
TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “As new technology changes our economy, the benefits should be shared by working people. That means less time at work, more time with family and friends, and decent pay for everyone.”
