At the AGM held in October, Dr Julian Lewis, MP for New Forest East, spoke eloquently on the subject of bullying of clerks. He was first alerted to this issue when a constituent and an ALCC member contacted him with regard to the behaviour she had suffered. Dr Lewis was horrified to learn this and has become a champion on this issue. We sent him some anonymised case histories of clerks who had been forced to leave as a result of the treatment received from some Councillors.
He is now writing to all MP’s to seek support for an Early Day Motion on this matter. The motion is below:
What you can do
1. All members to write to your MP’s asking that they back this motion and have it discussed in Parliament.
2. If you have specific examples of this sort of behaviour that you have suffered you can also include this in your letter to the MP
3. You can also list this on the agenda for your Council to discuss and seek their endorsement of this EDM. The more people we have in support of clerks, the more we can influence change.
These are the first steps in our campaign to bring about change in the legislation to enable sanctions to be brought against those minority of Councillors who repeatedly engage in bullying and harassment of clerks.
